— disastrous strokes

“Amélie a soudain le sentiment étrange d’être en harmonie totale avec elle-même. Tout est parfait en cet instant. La douceur de la lumième, ce petit parfum dans l’air, la rumeur tranquille de la ville. Elle inspire profondément et la vie lui paraît alors si simple et si limpide qu’un élan d’amour comme un désir d’aider l’humanité entière la submerge tout à coup.”

One of my favorite scenes from Amelie is right after she’s changed a man’s life by returning several precious items from his childhood (though I guess the entire movie is a “favorite part” for me). Inks/sketching in Manga Studio, colors in Photoshop. As close to done as it’ll probably ever get. Done in about an hour.

By that time, Joscelin had arrived, and his sword sang free of its sheath as he drew it. “David de Rocaille,” he said softly. “Turn and face me.”

The remaining Cassiline backed slowly away, covering Ysandre’s retreat. In the stillness, David de Rocaille turned to meet Joscelin Verreuil.

Something more completed, yes? This is warrior-priest Joscelin, from Jacqueline Carey‘s fabulous Kushiel’s Legacy books. I drew him in a pseudo-comic for my friend Christy, who is developing some really breathtaking compositions inspired by the books. This image is old, but I was in a mood to post it. The best part of this picture to me is that Joscelin has only recently come out of hiding, which involved dying his hair brown (which is why his eyebrows are blonde – I wanted a fun reminder of his epic blondness). If I had to have a second go at this, I’d probably angle the sword differently and re-do the vambraces. Never say never…though I guess when you run a sketchblog, threats like that are a given. (Fun fact: I’d thought that I knew how to spell vambraces up until literally thirty seconds ago when I had to check. I wasn’t.)

I almost forgot to post today. Here’s Delara. She is 30% anxious, 30% annoyed, and 40% curious most of the time. She also wears shawls. A lot. This doodle is texture’d to spice it up a bit.

Sass-brows. That’s the unofficial name I’m giving you, girl. I mean, seriously, I was just minding my own business when you leapt out of the end of my brush pen and decided you and your smirky ways would take over the page.

This is Roshana again – same character as the one holding the sword a few entries prior to this. I was just testing out a pen I bought for fun (it’s a Pentel Pocket Brush Pen and yes, it’s as fun as everyone says it is). Unlike computer doodles, this has no date because I don’t date my sketchbooks…though I’m beginning to think I should.

This is an original character – or some iteration of one. His name is Mir and while you can’t really tell by his posture here, he is built/quite athletic! He’s also really enthused and in awe of like, the world. I’m trying not to make him a man-child, but this was a doodle that I mostly wanted to use to convey my OWN amazement, so that’s my reasoning there. It’s also like, 1:30 AM and I really am just posting this because I said I would post every day. So ignore my babble and please enjoy his glee.

Lirael, Daughter of the Clayr.
I read Lirael while on a plane ride to Australia from New York. A fitting idea: Garth Nix, the author of the book, is Australian. Reader, I loved it immensely. It made the long, long flight so, so short. Anyway, she is a female character that is brilliant and I love her for her ability to be emotional and practical in just the right amounts. It’s an achievement how much growing she does in just one book. Highly recommended! Anyway, this is just a doodle I did one night in May.

I’m so serious about that updating thing. See! Here I am! Posting things! These were done in August. They are characters from George R R Martin’s Song of Ice and Fire series. I was probably reading Storm of Swords or Clash of Kings at that point. I mix up the book titles a heck of a lot, for someone who has actually read them. Shh, don’t tell.

Lord Snow. I wish I got Ghost in, but I kind of just wanted to see how I’d draw his face. Next time! This one was done with Photoshop in about an hour or so.

Daenerys Targaryen. Giving a total bitchface, but hey, she’s Khaleesi, gosh darn it, and she has to suspect your motives if she wants to ~survive~. It is known, yo. Next time I draw her there will be more braids and a dragon. Sketched in Painter.

And just as a silly thing, here’s a doll maker I was playing around with — rather than make my own Princess I made Dany for fun. Beware, for you too may spend the rest of your day on that website making them.

I mean it. I’m going to update it every day for a week. A WEEK! STARTING TODAY! With stuff I’ve drawn since my last update, which was painfully long ago.

Here’s the first one. I drew my friend Ronnie in April. He’s immensely talented and kept leaving fun songs on our friends’ facebook walls for their birthdays, so I figured I’d make him something using my own “skills” (ha). I bet he can rock a skinny tie in real life, too.

It's Ronnie, y'all.

Ah, what else is new?

Random news: I found a really nice tablet in my basement, apparently it’d been there for like, two years? (by the way, my basement is magic) But that’s a whole ‘nother story. Point is, it’s been a blast learning how to use it, and doodling.

This is Roshana, and anyone who actually knows anything about fencing should forgive me for this pose and concentrate instead on her magic poof pants.

Little thing I did for a friend on her birthday..

Self portrait. Of my brain. Noms..

In terms of things of note, I think I’ve kind of given up on Painter as my coloring program for the moment. Something about Photoshop seems so much more right, now that it has a built in set of brushes and a preloaded workspace for digital painting. I’ve also been fiddling with this brilliant pentel brush pen that I’d heard people talking about on the internet and decided to try for myself. I’ll probably upload some doodles once they amass. That’s all, really. See you in another decade the next time I decide to update (kidding).

HEY. So, I’ve been quite bad and haven’t updated in ages. The reason is that I’ve been working on big, full color commissions this season. I’d like to share the pieces I’ve been working on since October.

Rapunzel! I kind of like her braided more than with her hair all willy-nilly.

Sleeping Beauty. Click for a slightly larger version, as my layout isn’t really friendly to wide images. The hardest part of this and Rapunzel was getting the hair, but I have learned much about blonde hair as a result. (I am a brunette.)

This one’s supposed to be a Dark Fairy; I think she came out a little more mischievous than dark, but I guess it could go either way. She’s up to something, anyhow.

Evil Witch. This one is my favorite. I quite like how her color scheme and outfit came out, as well as her nasty expression. Those eyebrows are ferocious! Heh.

I’ve definitely learned a lot about color and texture while completing these. I’ve also gotten to like Photoshop a lot more than Painter when it comes to coloring – maybe it’s because I have better swatches on Photoshop and understand the brush mechanics a little better. Who knows! All I know is that I’m going to be sketching a lot more now that these are done – I miss working with good old pencil and paper.
